Buy your “Full Name” Domain Name Now!

After careful consideration I went ahead and purchased the .co.uk domain name of my full name, Tom Birmingham. With no immediate plans to develop the domain in to a website, you may wonder why I actually bought it?

To start off with — it’s cheap, £7 per 2 years (registered with 123-reg.co.uk). It prevents that horrible feeling you get when you know you’ve done something wrong. If, one day, I had woken up to find the domain had been registered by someone else, I would have been angry at myself. My advice – get your full name domain if it’s available, and while it’s cheap. Domain prices are only going up with increasing global population and growing internet usage.

In future, if I want to focus more on a UK audience I can develop tombirmingham.co.uk in to a seperate website with tailored content. You’re probably thinking it’s going to be British slang, and you would be right! Joking aside, it could also be used on business cards or for marketing

Continuing on the Social Networking Theme

After signing up for Facebook and LinkedIn recently, I started looking at Twitter. I’ve been on the site before and dismissed it as something that kids might find entertaining, but of having no real use for business. After all, tweets about brushing teeth etc. are not the most compelling content!

Today, I visited the twitter page of well known domainer. He uses twitter to share links from around the web on subjects that particularly interest me, such as web design, development, SEO and marketing. Seeing how he’s using Twitter has made realise there’s definitely some value in using it and I’ve signed up for an account. Look out for some twits shortly 😛

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

2010 promises to be great. Success is accomplished by imagination and determination, and I intend to be more innovative and hard working this year.

Networking is definitely a weakness of mine. Finding a balance between maintaining privacy and building great business relationships is something I’ve not quite located yet. With that said, I’ve joined LinkedIn and Facebook recently. Connect with me if you have a passion for the internet ventures, creative start ups or want to chat business.

Have a fun weekend!

Elusive #1 Spot in Google for Tom Birmingham

Admittedly this site leaves a lot to be desired in terms of design, and come to think of it, functionality and usefullness. The main goal is to get to #1 spot in Google for the term “Tom Birmingham”. The current #1 spot is held by a Wikipedia article about the U.S. politician Tom Birmingham. That Tom Birmingham previously owned the domain name TomBirmingham.com. Fortunately someone let it expire and I grabbed it. Now, back to the main goal of usurping Wikipedia and gaining the #1 spot.

Will Google penalize me for transparent ambition? That would be interesting and disconcerting at the same time.  Hopefully not. They shouldn’t right?
